Student Retention Services

The primary focus of The Retention Program at Southern University at Shreveport is to increase the retention, persistence, degree attainment, and graduation rate of students admitted to the college either as first-time freshmen or transfer students. Program personnel work collaboratively with the campus community to ensure that this objective is met. Major services provided by the Retention Office include: working with faculty members and academic advisors to implement an “early alert” notification system as a means of monitoring student attendance and progress in classes; intervening appropriately with students who have been identified as having frequent absences; and monitoring the midterm progress of students who have been placed on probation or readmitted following an appeal.  In conjunction with the Office of Financial Aid, scholarship recipients are monitored and tracked to ensure that they retain their scholarship eligibility.  Through a planned program of activities, the Office of Retention aggressively implements retention strategies that help the institution manage enrollment and increase the graduation rate through advisement and retention.  

Using the following methods, the Office of Retention Services fulfills its purpose of supporting students until their educational goals at SUSLA are complete:

• Creating a nurturing environment
• Encouraging pre-registration and registration for the following semester
• Coaching students to advocate for themselves within the University system
• Serving as a referral for students needing academic and personal support
• Providing an opportunity for students to share issues and concerns that are preventing academic success
• Helping students to develop strategies for successful matriculation

College life can sometimes be difficult to balance, but the Office of Student Retention Services is ready to help support students during their years at Southern University at Shreveport.

Spring Health Fair-Tips for Treats. 85 Students received information on Retention and The Center for Student Success Center. Mr. Keith Brown, Motivational Speaker The Office of Retention assisted with the Motivation in Motion Seminar. Retention invited all freshman classes and encouraging them to come attend a powerful event to help motivate freshman before midterm.
